The piles of hay are where we have planted trees (Eucalypts and Acacias) to form several sun traps along the south border. The trees have grown well during the last year, and we have observed that many of the trees with guards were browsed by the local animals while unprotected trees were untouched. This time we will not use guards. I suspect we will lose some trees outright due to this. But the energy saving in not guarding trees will be worth it, furthermore we are planting much further out in the field which seems to deter the browsers.
